Androgenetic Alopecia Clinical Trials: What is Androgenetic Alopecia?

Androgenetic alopecia is a common form of hair loss caused by a combination of genetics and hormones. It occurs when hair follicles are affected by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that shrinks the follicles and shortens the hair growth cycle. Over time, this leads to thinner, weaker hairs and eventually a reduction in hair density. It is more common in adults and progresses gradually over time.

In men, androgenetic alopecia typically begins with a receding hairline or thinning at the crown, often forming an “M” shape before progressing to more extensive baldness. In women, it usually appears as widespread thinning across the scalp, especially along the part, without a significant change in the hairline. Although it cannot be completely cured, treatments such as minoxidil, finasteride (for men), low-level laser therapy, or hair transplants can help slow hair loss and, in some cases, stimulate regrowth.
