What is Mohs micrographic surgery?

Most skin cancers are removed from the body through excision. However, scarring of the skin can occur following surgery. With Mohs micrographic surgery, the dermatologist can not only excise skin cancer cells with less scarring, but can completely eliminate the skin cancer cells from the body with deeper excisions. The treatment was developed for recurring skin cancer, as well as skin cancer found on more visible areas of the body and face where more noticeable scarring may be a cosmetic concern.
How does Mohs micrographic surgery work?
The Mohs micrographic procedure is incredibly thorough. The doctor will remove layers of skin, which are then evaluated in a microscope, to remove the skin cancer. Each layer will determine how much skin tissue is removed during the next layer. Some types of skin cancer, including melanoma, can have a larger surface area but deeper “roots.” Mohs micrographic surgery allows for the doctor to remove deeper cancer while minimizing the scarring on the surface level. When cancer is removed using this methodology, the success rate for full removal is incredibly high. To perform the procedure, doctors need hours of continued training and experience to practice this surgical technique in their own facility.
