What is a dermal filler?
As we age, skin can lose both volume and elasticity. A dermal filler is a minimally invasive injectable treatment option to help restore lost volume to the face and minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. Some fillers may also be used to help reduce the appearance of acne scars and stimulate collagen production. Dermal fillers can be used on various facial areas, including the cheeks, lips, and under the eyes. There are many different types of dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid fillers, calcium hydroxylapatite fillers, and poly-L-lactic fillers. Each type of dermal filler has its own unique mechanism of action. Some work by stimulating collagen production, while others work by repurposing natural substances found in the body to reproduce their effects. For example, the hyaluronic acid dermal filler, one of the most popular cosmetic dermal fillers, utilizes hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance of the body that helps hydrate and give volume to the skin. When used in dermal fillers the result is more moisturized and fuller skin. Dermal fillers also come in temporary and permanent treatment options. Your doctor can help discuss and determine which type of dermal filler may be best for your cosmetic needs.
Why are dermal fillers used?
Dermal fillers are used to help treat signs of aging of the face. Dermal fillers may also be used to help rejuvenate and restore the youthful appearance of aging hands. Depending on the type of filler used, dermal fillers can help:
- Provide facial contouring of volume-deficient areas, such as the cheeks
- Add lift to certain areas of the face
- Treat moderate to severe facial creases, including frown lines, marionette lines, and nasolabial folds
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduce the appearance of acne scars and other scarring
- Add volume to the lips
What does treatment involve?
Dermal filler treatment can be completed in the comfort of your doctor’s office and involves your doctor using an injectable to help add volume to volume-deficient areas of the face. To begin, your doctor will sterilize intended treatment areas. A numbing agent may be applied to the face to help minimize any discomfort. Once you are comfortable and relaxed, your doctor will gently inject the filler into appropriate treatment areas. After all needed areas have been treated, you should be able to return to your normal daily routines, however, your doctor may recommend that you avoid intense levels of activity for the first day of treatment. Post-procedure you may notice slight swelling and bruising at the treatment sites. These are normal side effects and will diminish within a few days. Depending on the type of filler used, results may be visible immediately following treatment. To help maintain results, repeat visits may be required.
