7 Tips for Beating Winter Dry Skin

dry skin

Dry skin is one of the most common clinical skin conditions we see at the Dermatology Treatment and Research Center in Dallas. During winter, even more patients find themselves struggling with dryness, sensitivity, and itching. Try these dermatologist-backed tips to rehydrate your skin this season and find relief.

1. Use a Humidifier

If your indoor air lacks moisture, use a humidifier. This can help restore much-needed moisture to the air and your skin. The ideal indoor humidity level is between 30-50%. You want just the right balance to hydrate your skin without increasing the moisture to the point it causes breakouts.

2. Boost Your Moisturizer Regimen

Typically, you should apply moisturizer as soon as you wash your face or get out of the shower.

3. Switch to Mineral Makeup

Regular makeup can have drying chemicals and fragrances that irritate your skin. Mineral makeup is gentler and designed for sensitive skin. Be sure to apply a hydrating primer before foundation or concealer.

4. Opt for a Gentle Skin Cleanser

Switch any strong cleansers you use out for gentler ones during the winter. These should be paraben- and fragrance-free. Look for products that are made for sensitive skin; we would be happy to recommend our favorites.

5. Use Hydrating Face Masks Twice a Week

Sit back and relax! Hydrating face masks can easily restore moisture to the skin and improve your complexion while reducing dryness, itching, and flaking.

6. Wear Gloves to Protect Dry Hands

If you find your hands constantly dry with cracked skin, consider wearing gloves more frequently. Apply a hydrating hand cream and immediately put your gloves on. This will help keep them moisturized and stop dry air from irritating them.

7. Use Ointments Instead of Lotions

Lotions are thick and can clog pores and cause irritation that worsens dry skin. Instead, try to use an ointment with natural ingredients like jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, and glycerin.
